For sewing or repairing leatherwork, crafts, outdoor gear, and sports equipment.
Review by Jeanne Elpel

I like quality tools. The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl is a quality tool, made in America since 1909. I used the Speedy Stitcher for sewing a pair of buckskin leather mittens. In one evening, I learned how to use the stitcher and sew a mitten. The principle is the same as a sewing machine yet easier to carry, less expensive and does not require electricity. The awl is suitable for repairing hide-holes during tanning, making buckskin clothing and leather goods.

The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl comes with a conveniently pre-threaded spool and two needles securely protected underneath the awl's chuck. The Speedy Stitcher Kit comes with extra needles and an extra roll of thread. The thread is waxed polyester and closely matches a smoked tan buckskin color. I was able to sew my two mittens with the thread from the original spool.

To use the Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl, unthread the chuck and select a needle to secure in the chuck, thread the needle from the spool housed in the awl, then simply push the awl needle through the workpiece (a piece of leather or an old phone book works well to support the workpiece), pull the tail-end of the thread through the workpiece to a length a few inches longer than the distance you wish to sew, pull the awl out, move over a little, and push awl through workpiece and pull the awl slightly back forming a loop of thread on the backside of the workpiece, take the tail-end of the thread on the backside and thread it through the loop then withdraw the awl and cinching up the loop drawing the tail-end thread half way into the workpiece, step over and repeat.

The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl is a great tool for repairing outdoor and camping equipment, including tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, and tarps. It is also useful for fixing sporting equipment, such as baseball gloves, hockey pads, saddles and harnesses, as well as for household repairs, such as upholstery tears or fixing shoes, purses and luggage.

For closer (finer) stitches try our Glover's Needles which are smaller in diameter than the awl needles but can accommodate either the fine or coarse waxed thread.
