98.6 Degrees
The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive
How to Survive Fear, Panic, and the Biggest Outdoor Killers
By Cody Lundin. Illustrated by Russ Miller

There must be hundreds of wilderness survival books on the market, but if you only read one, then read this one. Written by Cody Lundin, a personal friend and co-host of Dual Survival on the Discovery Channel, 98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your Ass Alive focuses entirely on essential knowledge needed to prevent an emergency wilderness situation, or to get safely out of one if something goes wrong.

Most other survival texts stray into hunting, trapping, and foraging methods for long-term survival living, but 98.6 Degrees gets in your face with the essentials--you have to stay properly heated or cooled, clothed and hydrated, to maintain your body temperature at 98.6 Degrees until you are rescued. Most survival situations last only about 72 hours, Lundin points out, before rescuers find you either alive or dead. Therefore, you don't need to be proficient at trapping squirrels or catching fish for food. You just have to stay alive until you get out.

98.6 Degrees is written and illustrated with an in-your-face style, racy cartoons, and some colorful language, which may be a turn-off to more conservative readers. But Cody is out to get your attention in whatever way he can to hammer in the essentials of survival. Most readers will find this to be a fun and enlightening read. It could truly save your life. ISBN: 1-58685-234-5. 2003. 214 pages. $17.00.

When All Hell Breaks Loose
Stuff You Need to Survive when Disaster Strikes
By Cody Lundin. Illustrated by Russ Miller

Survival expert Cody Lundin's new book, When All Hell Breaks Loose: Stuff You Need to Survive When Disaster Strikes is what every family needs to prepare and educate themselves about survival psychology and the skills necessary to negotiate a disaster whether you are at home, in the office, or in your car. While his previous book 9.8.6 Degrees emphasizes wilderness survival, When All Hell Breaks Loose is primarily about urban survival.

The book entertains as it informs, describing how to maximize a survival mind-set necessary for maximum self-reliance. Lundin offers solutions for finding or creating potable water, storing foods, heating or cooling the home without conventional power, and creating alternative lighting options.

The color photo section includes educational tips, such as making a deadfall trap with a book and carving the trap parts from pencils, along with regular mouse and rat traps for catching food in an emerency. In the next photo Lundin shows Barbie and Ken dolls dressed in mouse furs. He makes a serious subject compelling and fun.

Lundin teaches how to makeshift bucket toilet and how to compost the results. This is basic stuff that every person should know. Lundin also addresses basic first-aid and hygiene skills, and alternative communication and transportation ideas, as well as makes recommendations for a survival kit "go bag" for the home, office, or car in case of evacuation.

Cody Lundin has been featured in dozens of national and international media sources, including Dateline NBC, CBS News, USA Today, The Donny and Marie Show, and CBC Radio One in Canada, as well as on the cover of Backpacker magazine. He is presently co-hosting Dual Survival with Dave Canterbury on the Discovery Channel. Cody is the only person in Arizona licensed to catch fish with his hands, and lives in a passive solar earth home sixty miles from Prescott, Arizona. 450 pages. Gibbs Smith Publisher. 2007. ISBN: 978-1-4236-0105-0.
